Commencement Ceremony
How long is the Commencement Ceremony?
The Commencement ceremony typically lasts about 2 hours, and is followed by an optional Dean’s Reception for graduates and their families.
Do my family and friends need tickets for the commencement ceremony?
The SCS Commencement Ceremony is being planned as an outdoor event. Outdoor ceremonies will not require tickets; guests are seated on a first come, first served basis.
If the ceremony is moved indoors due to extreme weather or other extenuating circumstances, graduates will be limited to a certain number of guests (amount TBA) due to indoor capacity restrictions at McDonough Arena and the high number of SCS graduates. Graduates will be able to claim their guest tickets via the Marching Order site, using the password they created upon registration. Graduates do not need a ticket to attend the ceremony.
The event will also be live-streamed for family and friends.
I have multiple guests coming to Commencement. What should I do?
Guests without tickets will not be allowed to enter McDonough Arena. However, in addition to space in McDonough Arena, there will be overflow space, where additional guests may watch the ceremony on TV without needing tickets. All guests are invited to join graduates for the reception following the ceremony.
Due to capacity limits in McDonough Arena, SCS is unable to issue additional guest tickets in advance of the ceremony, other than the TBA number of tickets guaranteed to each graduate.
Do children need tickets for the indoor ceremony?
In accordance with GU Athletics policy, children under the age of 3, who can comfortably sit on an adult’s lap, will not need a ticket to enter McDonough Arena.
What if I need to request an accommodation?
For questions related to commencement ceremony logistics, or to make accommodation requests, please email scsgrad@georgetown.edu.
Will the commencement ceremony be live-streamed?
Yes, the ceremony will be broadcast live online. Information on where to tune in will be shared on Georgetown’s website and social media channels prior to the event.
What should I wear to Commencement?
Business attire is suggested for all graduates. As the day of the ceremony involves walking, possibly on wet or muddy grass, please be conscious of the shoes you choose to wear. High heels are not recommended. Please note: graduates without regalia will not be permitted to participate in Commencement.
How do I obtain my academic regalia (i.e., robes, hoods, caps/tassels)?
Academic regalia is required to participate in the commencement ceremony and can be purchased in person or online from the University bookstore. Students must have a gown, hood, and cap/tassel or tam/tassel for the ceremony. Stoles and keepsake tassels are available for purchase but are not required. We recommend that you purchase your regalia no later than Thursday, May 1 to ensure that you receive it in time.
What is the best way to get to Georgetown’s Main Campus, park, and find the ceremony?
Parking for graduation will require patience and planning prior to arrival.
On-campus parking will be extremely limited. The use of Metro/GUTS buses or taxis/rideshare services is strongly encouraged. Please allow plenty of time for parking and shuttle transportation. Learn more about parking, travel, and accessibility on this page.
Are there any items not permitted at Commencement events?
For the safety and enjoyment of all guests, we ask that you leave the following items at home: weapons (including pocket knives), non-collapsible umbrellas, metal or glass containers (there will be water stations throughout campus), backpacks or large bags, brooms or poles, animals (except service animals), noisemakers (including loudspeakers, cow bells, air horns, bullhorns and whistles), large signs or hanging items that block the views of others, drones, and skateboards, hoverboards or non-ADA use scooters (bicycles should be parked at designated bike racks).
How is Georgetown ensuring that Commencement is safe and celebratory?
Our focus is on celebrating the graduates and their families. We are monitoring events in the region and across the nation and we have enhanced security and planning. As we plan for many scenarios, we maintain a commitment to our Speech and Expression policy, which ensures freedom of expression but does not permit disruptions.
