FAQs

How long is the Commencement Ceremony?

The Commencement ceremony typically lasts about 2 hours, and is followed by a Dean’s Reception (optional) for graduates and their families.

What should I wear to Commencement?

Business attire is suggested for all graduates. As the day of the ceremony involves walking, possibly on wet or muddy grass, please be conscious of the shoes you choose to wear. High heels are not recommended. Please note: graduates without regalia will not be permitted to participate in Commencement.

Where can I order graduation announcements/invitations?

Personalized graduation announcements and invitations can be purchased through the Georgetown University Josten’s catalogue here.

How many guests can I bring?

If the Ceremony is held outside on Healey Lawn, no tickets will be collected, and guests may claim seating on a first-come, first-served basis. However, if the ceremony is moved indoors due to rain, only guests with rain tickets will be permitted to enter.  Graduates may claim up to three (3) complimentary rain tickets. You will receive instructions for claiming your rain tickets after you RSVP for the Commencement ceremony. Graduates do not need rain tickets to enter the Arena.

Where can I find my tickets for the outdoor ceremony?

If the ceremony is held outside on Healy Lawn, no physical tickets will be collected, and your guests can find seats on a first come, first served basis. Tickets are only required in the event the ceremony is moved indoors due to weather.

It looks like rain, and I have more than three guests coming to Commencement. What should I do?

SCS cannot guarantee that guests without tickets will be allowed to enter McDonough Arena. However, in addition to space in McDonough Arena, there will be overflow space, where additional guests may watch the ceremony on TV without needing tickets. All guests are invited to join you for the reception following the ceremony.

Due to capacity limits in McDonough Arena, SCS is unable to issue additional guest rain tickets in advance of the ceremony, other than the three tickets guaranteed to each graduate.

Do children need tickets for the indoor ceremony?

In accordance with GU Athletics policy, children under the age of 3, who can comfortably sit on an adult’s lap, will not need a ticket to enter the Arena.

I claimed my free guest rain tickets, but I’ve lost my order. What should I do?

The easiest way to get your tickets is to find your email order confirmation; tickets are usually attached as a PDF file you can print. Can’t find them, having trouble printing, or not sure if you have an Eventbrite account? Just enter your email address at eventbrite.com/gettickets. You can also log into the Eventbrite app or reference the Tickets page within your account.

If you still can’t find your tickets, email scsgrad@georgetown.edu.

What is the best way to get to Georgetown’s Main Campus, park, and find the ceremony?

Parking for graduation will require patience and a little planning prior to arrival.

On-campus parking will be extremely limited. The use of Metro/GUTS buses or taxis/ride share services is strongly encouraged. Please allow plenty of time for parking and shuttle transportation. Learn more about parking, travel, and accessibility here.

I am no longer able to attend the Commencement ceremony. How will I get my diploma?
