Checklist for Commencement

⎕ Check your eligibility

It’s always a good idea to check in with your program advisor regarding your eligibility to participate in Commencement. If you have already graduated (Summer 2018 & Fall 2018 semesters) or will complete your degree requirements and graduate at the conclusion of the Spring or Summer 2019 semesters, you are eligible to participate.

You may also be eligible to walk in the Commencement ceremony if you will have enough credits at the end of the Spring 2019 term to finish your remaining credits in the Summer 2019 term.

      • BALS students must be within 12 credits of completion at the conclusion of the Spring 2019 term.
    • MPS and non-thesis MALS students must be within 6 credits at the conclusion of the Spring 2019 term.

Apply to graduate

The Spring 2019 Graduation Application has now closed.

If you missed the application deadline but will have completed all degree requirements by the conclusion of the Spring 2019 semester, email If you are finishing your degree requirements in the Summer 2019 semester, this step does not apply to you.

*Your application to graduate does NOT indicate your participation in the Commencement Ceremony. However, if you do not apply for graduation, you will not receive your diploma.

RSVP for the Commencement Ceremony

The 2019 SCS Commencement Ceremony will take place on Friday, May 17 at 12 p.m. on Healy Lawn on Georgetown University’s main campus. PLEASE NOTE: The procession will begin at 11:30 a.m. Guests must be seated prior to the procession.

Commencement-eligible students have received an invitation to their Georgetown email addresses.

Claim your guests’ rain tickets

While the ceremony is traditionally held outside, inclement weather is always a possibility. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be moved inside to McDonough Arena. Space in the Arena is limited. You will receive instructions on claiming your rain tickets after you RSVP for the Commencement ceremony. If you have any trouble claiming your rain tickets, please email

Students may claim up to three (3) guest tickets, which grant access to the Arena. Additional covered overflow seating will be available outside of the Arena. Only students will be able to access the site to order guest rain tickets. Students are responsible for transferring those tickets to their guests, as they will not enter the indoor ceremony at the same time. Tickets will be scanned upon entry and may be displayed over mobile device or printed out.

Order your regalia

The deadline to order your mandatory regalia is April 11, 2019. Please allow for 5-6 weeks for delivery. For more information about ordering regalia, click here.
